Ferdinando castro gonzalez
Vice President
As an international student from Venezuela, I saw how the lack of community service and sense of social responsibility destroyed my country. Sadly, I feel I was part of the problem. I considered an opportunity to be thrust into a new environment and culture to learn from past mistakes and help others in the process. In my opinion, the best way to learn how to lead is through engagement with the community one is in. Because of this, I have been active with 11 organizations on campus — adding more than 700 recorded hours of community service between Fall 2019 and Spring 2020.
I am currently serving as 2020-2021 Dallas College - Richland Campus Vice President. During my term, I have been an election activist. I assisted Dallas College in marketing the different resources available to our communities to vote during a pandemic. I also created a Rally to vote challenge, a district-wide event aiming to motivate students to register and vote. I am hosting our town hall events addressing different issues in our communities and creating a scholarship webinar to help our students have access to our resources. In the past, I also served as the Region 2 Resolution committee chair. I had to organize our chapters throughout the region and realized research of the issues our communities have. After the study, we proposed five resolutions during the SGA regional conference and got passed. I also served as a senator during my first year with SGA, supporting our officers and creating several original events geared toward reducing the carbon footprint our campus sent to the environment In my quest to serve the communities I am planted in, I have 1) received the United States Presidential Volunteer Service Award, 2) became the for Phi Theta Kappa honor society most distinguished member and a hall of honor awardee internationally, in Texas, and Richland Campus, 3) obtained the 2020 OSL Student Volunteer of the year, 4) received The Networker Award for servant leadership 2020, 5) Student Panelist for the 2020 Dallas College Conference Day, 6) got nominated for the 2020 and 2019 DCCCD Amidon Beauchamp 7) raised over 6 thousand dollars in scholarships for DCCCD students, 8) supported institutions outside DCCCD in furthering their missions and extending their reach, 9) mentored others to be leaders on campus, and more. These Accolades caught the attention of my honors professors and advisors. They selected me to be a speaker and moderator for the 2020 Richland College Honors Conference to discuss gun violence in America. In conclusion, I am an honor scholar who has a passion for serving others, and I am confident that I will continue to go above and beyond to make sure we all have a better community to live in.
