Parliamentarian Gissell Rubi
Gissell Rubi comes from a big Honduran family. She graduated high school back in her country at 16 years old. She took a year off to try to figure out where would be the best place for her to pursue her dreams. She applied to different countries and was accepted in Holland with a full scholarship for a Video Technology degree with a Visual Effects field of study. When she was able to take in everything; she couldn’t believe it had actually happened to her. Her family always supported her and was willing to let her go to a complete different country/ continent. A week before she had to give back an answer, she decided she wasn’t ready to be by herself and take such a huge step towards her career. Coming to North Lake College was her last option, but little did she know, it was her best one. When she joined the North Lake College community, she discovered her passion for medicine. It was then that she decided to change her major to Physical Therapy. As her first semester went by, she learned that there was so much more she could do at NLC. She started to become more involved in events on campus, but not necessarily for any particular club. Sophomore year came by and she decided it was time for her to help out with some issues students were facing. She started to get involved with NLC’s Student Government Association, and later on she was given the opportunity to join Region II as the Parliamentarian Officer. She gratefully accepted the position and immediately started training with her advisor, Dr. Beth and other E-Board officers in order to help her understand her role. Everyone was warm and welcoming, which made her transition to joining the Executive Board extremely smooth. Gissell wants her experiences to be shared so that other international students are aware that they do not have limits regarding the opportunities any Dallas Community Colleges have to offer.
